But we must never forget that we live in 'the land of the free' because America also is 'the home of the brave.' On Memorial Day, we pause to pay tribute to the members of America's military services who gave their lives in service to our nation. From its beginning, Memorial Day has been a time of remembrance and healing, a day to pay tribute to the sacrifice made by so many of our fellow Americans to protect the liberties we enjoy today. In their own way, Americans across the nation will pause to pay respect to the soldiers who died defending the United States: families will hold reunions and gather together to honor the memories of their loved ones, and from our largest cities to our smallest towns, Main Streets will be transformed by colorful parades to celebrate local heroes.
